Secrets to a Successful Move

Planning a summer move? You're in good company—summer is peak season for movers (per the American Moving & Storage Association). It can feel overwhelming, but these practical tips will help you breeze through it:

  • Book movers early — Call now! They often need 6+ weeks' notice (longer for cross-country moves) as summer books up fast.
  • Build buffer time — Schedule overlap between your old lease/end date and new home possession. Factor in pre-move updates (painting, flooring, etc.) so work happens before furniture arrives.
  • Declutter aggressively — Sort rarely used items. Toss broken stuff, host a yard sale, donate the rest right away—less to move = easier & cheaper.
  • Measure everything — Note room/door dimensions, outlet locations, and appliance fit in your new home. (Lesson learned: I once moved a fridge that blocked the dishwasher because I skipped depth!)
  • Prep privacy windows — If sellers take blinds/curtains, measure bedrooms & baths now and buy coverings ahead of arrival.
  • Set up utilities & services — Arrange phone/internet hookups early (some need days/weeks). Submit USPS change-of-address. Notify banks/creditors of address/bank changes.
  • Score free boxes — Hit up grocery, electronics, or office stores for sturdy discards. Grab a tape gun and collect newspapers for packing (cheaper than bubble wrap).
  • Use a moving kit — Grab color-coded, pre-printed labels (e.g., Pack-N-Label style, ~$37) for rooms + inventory checklists. Your Realtor might even have them free!
  • Pack an "essentials" box — Include phone, clothes, basic kitchen items, toiletries, meds. Keep valuables (jewelry, docs) and irreplaceables (laptop) with you in your car.
  • Protect valuables — Note serial numbers/models for electronics/art; buy mover insurance. Movers won't cover self-packed items unless the box vanishes.
  • Secure important docs — Gather manuals, keys, titles, wills, birth certs in one portable folder—keep it safe and accessible.
  • Clean as you go — Wipe/pack rooms progressively. Deep-clean your current rental to secure the full deposit.
  • Start fresh in the new place — Wipe drawers/cabinets, vacuum, make beds first—then unpack at your pace.

And if you're moving with pets? Summer moves are hectic enough without adding furry family stress—pets often feel the chaos most! Here are practical, expert-backed tips (from sources like ASPCA, AKC, and pet pros) to keep your dog or cat safe, calm, and happy through the transition:

  • Start early (1–2 months out) — Schedule a vet checkup for health certs, updated vaccines (rabies key!), microchip/ID updates with new address, and records transfer. Stock meds/food supply.
  • Crate/carrier train gradually — Introduce carriers/kennels weeks ahead with treats, toys, and meals inside to make them a "safe den." Practice short car rides to build comfort.
  • Maintain routine as long as possible — Stick to feeding, walks, playtime, and bedtime schedules during packing to reduce anxiety—predictability is huge for pets!

Follow these, and you'll arrive ready to enjoy your new home without the chaos. Happy moving! 🏠✨
